Hurricane Season Prep: How to Protect Your Home and Peace of Mind in Navarre

Home » Hurricane Season Prep: How to Protect Your Home and Peace of Mind in Navarre

Living along the Emerald Coast means beautiful sunny beach days and coastal beauty, but it also means being prepared for hurricane season. From June 1 through the end of November, it’s important to stay prepared. Whether you’re a longtime local or a new homeowner in Navarre, here’s how to prepare your home and family for whatever wind and rain the season may bring.

Start with a Hurricane Kit

Every home should have a well-stocked emergency kit ready before the first named storm even forms. Here are some essentials to include:

  • Bottled water: One gallon per person per day for at least three days. (For example, a family of three would need nine gallons.)
  • Non-perishable food: Stock up early to avoid last-minute crowds. Choose shelf-stable items that are easy to prepare and will keep (unopened) through the season.
  • Flashlights or battery-powered lanterns: Don’t forget extra batteries.
  • First-aid kit: Include basics like bandages, gauze, medical tape, antiseptic spray or wipes, and any personal medications.
  • Important documents: Store items like social security cards and birth certificates in waterproof bags.
  • Power banks or battery backups: Choose ones that can charge multiple devices during prolonged outages.
  • Pet supplies: Include food, water, and medications for at least three days.

Local pro tip: Keep your kit in a labeled plastic bin that’s easy to grab and go.

Prep Your Property

Walk around your home and secure anything that could become dangerous in high winds. As soon as a tropical storm watch is issued:

  • Bring in patio furniture, potted plants, and lawn decorations.
  • Trim trees and remove dead branches.
  • Clear gutters and drains of debris to reduce the risk of flooding.

Hurricanes often bring heavy rainfall in a short time, so taking these steps early can prevent costly water damage.

Know Your Evacuation Zone

Navarre is no stranger to evacuation orders. Make sure you know your zone, your route, and your destination if you need to leave. The Santa Rosa County Emergency Management website offers up-to-date maps and alerts.

If you’re new to the area, talk with your neighbors or real estate agent. Local knowledge is incredibly valuable when a storm is approaching.

Local pro tip: Keep your gas tank at least half full during hurricane season. This helps you avoid long lines at gas stations when watches and warnings are issued, and skip the gas lines if an evacuation is in order.

Protect What Matters Most

Review your homeowner’s insurance policy now. Make sure you’re covered for both wind and flood damage. Flood insurance is a separate policy and often isn’t included in standard coverage, so speak with your insurance provider to confirm what’s protected.

Secure Your Home Ahead of Time

When a storm is forecasted, don’t wait to act. Consider these upgrades and precautions:

  • Install window protection such as shutters or impact-resistant glass.
  • Pick up sandbags from local distribution sites if you’re in a flood-prone area.
  • Invest in a backup generator to keep essential appliances running.
  • Use a waterproof safe to store valuable belongings and documents.

Stay Safe and Storm-Ready

Being proactive protects your home and your peace of mind. If you’re buying or selling along the coast, our team is here to guide you through the ins and outs of Florida living—including hurricane prep. At Navarre Real Estate Source, we don’t just know homes, we know the community.
